THE LIGHTING DESIGN AND SUPPLY FOR MOONDOG’S BADLANDS
Watch a cheeky little video of the sprawling beer hall and restaurant at the heart of the precinct in Docklands.
For Moondog’s Badlands location at Docklands we collaborated with long-term pals, Studio Y. The lighting design and supply was a hotbed (or is that a volcano-bed of ideas). To create the feel of carnival lights we wanted to be very authentic. So we turned up at Phillip Island Carnival with a plan, we’d propose a bet – we get hit 5 ducks on the shooting in a row we get to take all their carnival lighting, we lose we give them $200 – they were more than happy to take the bet. Not going to lie, didn’t go how we planned (I reckon the scope was bent) and we said ‘double or nothing a few times,’ but luckily we managed to track down the original supplier a few days later. Some say Dave is still there trying to hit them ducks. The things we do for a job hey….
But enough from us, Studio Y describes the project as: “We channelled ‘90s classic Jurassic Park to fit out the cavernous 1200-seat venue: think volcanic rocks, lofty palm trees and plenty of hideaways where guests can enjoy a pint. The focal 360-degree bar, inspired by the polychromatic rings and lights of carnivals, sits at the centre of the venue; dispensing Moon Dog’s rotating range of brews, fizzy seltzers and offbeat cocktails.” Step inside the space above.
