Readings, Chadstone Awarded At The 2025 LIT Lighting Design Awards
December 3, 2025
LIT is a global awards program that recognises innovation in lighting design and product design.
In some rather ace news, we have picked up a couple of winners 2025 LIT Lighting Design Awards.
LIT Lighting Design Awards is an annual lighting design competition where all entries are voted on by a grand jury panel composed of experienced and prominent academics and lighting designers. It truly celebrates the best in international lighting design.
We are thrilled to have Readings, Chadstone be awarded a Winner accolade for Lighting Design – Retail Design Lighting. Located within Chadstone’s new Market Pavilion precinct, Readings store (by Interior architects Kerstin Thompson) embodies a thoughtful exploration of sustainable design principles in retail environments.
A hallmark of the space is the suspended paper lantern, measuring 23m by 3.4m. The piece was produced in collaboration with designer Edward (Ed) Linacre. It was fabricated from recycled paper sourced from misprinted books unsuitable for retail distribution, this installation transforms publishing waste into a feature that showcases the brand’s commitment to sustainability. It’s lighting design worth writing about.
The Paper Lantern also received a Winner in Lighting Product Design – Ceiling Illumination. The ceiling’s paper lantern form evokes a timeless sense of calm and reverence, drawing on cultural references while reinterpreting them at an architectural scale. Extensive testing was undertaken to refine the lighting—balancing warmth, clarity, diffusion, energy efficiency and consistency across the expanse.
This illuminated ceiling is simultaneously a work of lighting innovation and a monumental lantern installation. More than a design feature, it communicates a powerful message: that discarded materials, thoughtfully reimagined, can inspire awe, ignite curiosity and shift perceptions of value in the built environment.
