The Journey of a Custom Luminaire at St. David's of Canterbury

Working with architects Randall Lindstrom and Jason Williams, this job required an eye for detail and an appreciation of church lighting and liturgical design.
ambience’s light planner, Lin Lam, wanted to create a more welcoming environment to embrace and accentuate the fine architectural detail and qualities of the building.
Another consideration was enabling the client the ability to control the lighting, in order to suit their preference for different events held in the church.
The major feature is the custom-made uplight and downlight cauldrons with an acrylic brush finish. Liam – ambience’s luminaire designer – says that
“the cauldron’s form proportional balance was integral to the finished look, with the chassis lever support, the down cylinder, and the uplight dish all balancing together”.
The control gear is away from the light source, and is accessible and serviceable from the top of the lever arm. It’s delicately planned right down to the globe, which projects heat away from the fitting itself. For the track lighting, we used the sleek Issimo LED track spots with the DD-12020 RAAT downlights in a warm white 3000K to achieve the welcoming environment.
Thanks to the staff at the church for giving us access to the site on numerous occasions to test the different light sources.
Hold on to your hats, gang!
Here is the journey of the uplight/downlight cauldrons as used in St. David’s of Canterbury.
