USING A RATHER LARGE MALLET ON YOUR LIGHTING PLAN

Sometimes, you don’t just want to bend the rules – you want to pull out a rather large cartoonish-like mallet and give them a decent whack on the head.
The lighting plan for MARCS new flagship was an opportunity for us to do just that.
MARCS is an iconic Australian brand with minimalism at its core
MARCS have a dedication to sophisticated and simple essentials, fine fabrics, and distinct details. Working with Larry Home from Webster Holdings, the lighting not only had to complement those traits, but also capture the intended aesthetic of a New York loft with dark palettes.
The design inspiration for this approach came from a mix of boutique, theatre and high-end residential. This gave us the chance to play with light, darkness, shade and shadow.
When it comes to retail lighting design, there are some tried and true formulas – usually ‘bright’, ‘brighter’, and ‘significantly brighter than before’. A captivating feature of Marcs Flagship is the tweaked lighting – or lack thereof – in general areas. This was used to create a high-end feel with dramatic mood.
The light and dark is designed to keep shoppers engaged with the products, but still comfortable enough to circulate for long periods. The light play also gives a heightened shopping experience with a sense from visitors that they’re almost exploring the space and range.
Ultimately, the product is the hero. Clusters of Flow downlights were used in display areas to powerful effect. This was to highlight the individual clothing items, and to also pack a punch.
With our brand new mallet, of course.
MARCS Flagship is an excellent example that, when you break conventions, you can achieve a truly great result for both space and brand.
