What is an ‘IP rating’, and what the hell do they mean?

What the hell are they?
IP (or “Ingress Protection“) ratings are defined in international standard EN 60529 (British BS EN 60529:1992, European IEC 60509:1989). They are used to define levels of sealing effectiveness of electrical enclosures against intrusion from foreign bodies (tools, dirt, etc.) and moisture.
And what the hell do they mean?
Quick IP rating hacks for Exterior Range/Suitability of installation for different IP-rated products:
IP20 Non-protected from solid particles and water – fitting can only be installed indoors
IP44 Protection from solid particles of 1mm in size and splashes of water from all sides – fitting can be installed outdoors but has to be under cover
IP54 Limited protection from ingress of dust and splashes of water from all sides – fitting can be installed outdoors but has to be under cover
IP65 Total protection from ingress of dust and hosing jets of water from all sides – fitting can be installed outdoors in open without any covers
IP66 Total protection from ingress of dust and strong hosing jets of water from all sides – fitting can be installed outdoors in open without any covers
