Our End-of-Year Project Review for 1987

Village Roadshow

What a year 1987 has been. We opened our doors, and here’s a lowdown of what’s been making waves in our world for the year.

Compact metal halide and compact fluoro is hot property right now, but we are also finding that Fibre optic is all the rage. Here’s one of our projects for Village Roadshow using this cutting-edge technology.

Never mind the camera, it was all “lights and action!”, in our latest retail design project with Rainer Hopf for Action World.

It is quite a task to illuminate the latest footwear straight from the US. This includes the second instalment in Nike’s signature shoe for basketballer Michael Jordan, known as the Jordan 2.

We launched our first promo film for the year too. Here’s a little look at it.

Japanese light movements were a big inspiration this year.

Tadao Ando

A visual merchandising display we produced.

Inspired by our favourite track for this year – Paid In Full by Eric B. & Rakim.

Say goodbye to your car phone, newbs! Some product display and retail lighting for some space age ‘mobile telephones’. The display also features the latest Macintosh computer for sales staff to print out customers contracts.

Retail lighting project for ‘Eyecare Consultants’.
We don’t reckon those Oakleys will ever go out of fashion.
Brashes

Last but certainly not least to see out the year, a custom piece for the booming Brashes office.

Some of our predictions for 1988 and beyond

  • A new technology called LED will be big. In fact – we think it could be huge! And, crazy as it sounds, we think it might be even bigger than metal halide!
  • An architect recently told us that the MR16 low voltage downlight is a fad. Time will tell if it takes off or not, our money is on it being used across in every single building in the world by 2017.
  • There is also talk of BLB (Black Like Blue) tubes being removed from bug zappers and put into nightclubs. We’re not sure how that one will go in 1988, but we have been trying to modify UV tubes to turn into tanning beds in the office, to get a glow like one of our favourite stars of the decade – George Hamilton.

NOTE: This post is in celebration of our 30th birthday. It’s been 30 years of lighting fun and games at ambience. We thank everyone who has been a part of our story for three decades, from 1987 to 2017! We look forward to the next three! #30yearsofambience
