Retail Lighting Design for a Heritage Building

Using lighting design to highlight heritage features.

We’ve lost count (no, we haven’t) of how many stores we’ve lit for the team at Mecca over the years, but every project still manages to bring something new. Their first Launceston store, which opened its doors within a heritage building early this month, is no exception.

The brief called for a lighting project that could achieve two things: work seamlessly with the open slab ceiling above the main retail area and make a feature of the vaulted ceiling sections that give the space its character.

Across the retail flow, our design team specified suspended H-profile track, paired with andro track mounted lights. This combination keeps the sightlines clean while discreetly managing all wiring within the track itself.

The adjustable spotlights fitted throughout give the Mecca team the flexibility to direct light exactly where products and displays need it most. This also allows the team to adapt as merchandising changes over time.

In the vaulted ceiling areas, the approach shifted as we fitted suspended track with integrated LED uplighting. The Serenade profile from our Symphony range washes light up into the ceiling form to highlight its shape rather than compete with it.

The store also features custom stretched fabric light boxes made to order by FAB, which are positioned above the make-up areas to provide soft, flattering light while adding a subtle feature to the space.

The result is a considered contrast: crisp and functional lighting where the retail experience needs it, and a softer, architectural glow where the ceiling itself becomes part of the story.

This project works so well because it shows how the same lighting language can bend to fit two different situations within one space. It addresses functional needs but uses thoughtful lighting design to give a distinct character to the space.
